student board respresentatives and staff

Marlboro Central School District recently hosted student Board of Education representatives and district leaders from Cornwall Central School District, Highland Central School District and Wallkill Central School District for a regional gathering focused on student voice, leadership and the role of student representatives in school district decision-making.

As part of the gathering, student representatives and district leaders from all four districts watched a live statewide meeting hosted by the New York State School Boards Association (NYSSBA) together at Marlboro High School. During the meeting, New York State education officials, including Education Commissioner Betty Rosa, shared information and updates with student representatives on topics including New York State graduation requirements and NY Inspires.

Former student Board representatives also shared their experiences and perspectives on the role, offering insight into how student representatives can contribute to their schools and districts. Student representatives were reminded of the importance of their perspectives in helping school districts and Boards of Education make informed decisions and chart a path forward.

Marlboro High School’s student Board representatives Laya’ Thompson, Isabella Fratto and Athanasios Toromanides attended alongside Marlboro Superintendent of Schools Michael Rydell and High School Principal Ryan Lawler. Student representatives from Cornwall, Highland and Wallkill attended with their respective district leaders.

Following the statewide meeting, the group continued with a regional discussion focused on issues affecting students and schools. Topics included the future of Regents examinations in New York State, student and staff trust and communication, and changes students would like to see in their schools.

The conversation also emphasized that student representatives do not need to agree with one another or with the adults serving on their district’s Board of Education. Instead, their role provides an opportunity to bring a distinct student perspective to important conversations.

During the discussion, Highland High School student Board representative Afreen Akter shared a perspective that differed from others in the group. Marlboro Superintendent Michael Rydell used the moment to encourage the student representatives to respectfully challenge ideas and share their own perspectives, even when those perspectives differ from the majority.

“Just because everyone agrees on something doesn’t mean you have to,” Rydell told the students, emphasizing that they were selected to bring a different perspective to the Board and should feel comfortable sharing it.

“We are really excited to partner with Wallkill, Cornwall and Highland to expand our student Board of Education representative program,” Rydell said. “Increasing student voice and input in our decision-making is essential.”

Lawler also highlighted the value of bringing neighboring districts together.

“Today was an exciting opportunity to collaborate with local districts,” Lawler said. “Student Board of Education representatives play a critical role in our school district, and today’s summit gave us an opportunity to share ideas and best practices.”

The regional gathering provided students with an opportunity not only to learn more about their responsibilities, but also to connect with peers serving in similar roles and begin building a network of student representatives across the region.
