School and community leaders stand in front of a fire truck

Marlboro Middle School students recently wrapped up their "One Book, One School" project with a powerful tribute.

For the past month, Dukes in Grades 6-7 have been reading "The Red Bandanna" by Tom Rinaldi—the inspiring story of Welles Crowther, a young man who lost his life on 9/11 while saving many others. On Wednesday, the students gathered in their Class Connection homerooms to finish the final chapter, reflect through discussion, and complete a hero-themed activity. Each student and staff member also received a red bandanna—thanks to the Student Council—and watched a heartfelt video message from Welles’ mother.

The day concluded with a moving moment: students joined together outside for a drone photo taken by the Marlboro Police Department, standing in formation as #19, Welles’ lacrosse number, alongside a firetruck provided by the Marlboro Fire Department.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this culminating activity so meaningful. Welles’ story will continue to inspire us to live with purpose, courage, and compassion!
