Life is hard but life is good. That was the powerful message shared by guest speaker Hashim Garrett during an assembly at Marlboro Middle School on September 22.
Garrett, who told students his personal story of redemption and forgiveness following a traumatic gang-related incident that left him partially paralyzed at just 15 years old, encouraged his audience to have more compassion and empathy toward others.
“Be kind to one another,” he said. “The reality is, you have no idea what your classmates are going through.”
He also urged the Dukes to seek help if they need it. “You are surrounded by adults who care about you and want to see you succeed,” he said.
Students, who had listened intently to Garrett's story, left the assembly just a little more informed—and empathetic—that day. Thank you to Mr. Garrett for sharing with us!
