Students greet a veteran

Patriotism was on full display as students from Marlboro Elementary School sang their hearts out for their country during a Memorial Day assembly held in the gymnasium on May 26.

Grade 1 students serenaded their classmates, teachers, and some special guests—local veterans Tom Shroeder, Eric Simmons, Jerry Greco, and Joe Freedborn—with the song “This Land is Your Land,” and Grade 3 followed with “You’re a Grand Old Flag.”

After the students’ performances, Lorraine Palermo of the American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) took the stage to announce the winner of this year’s Poppy Poster Contest run by the ALA Post 124. For the contest, students were asked to create a poster using the image of a poppy, a symbol of remembrance and hope.

At the conclusion of the assembly, students gifted the veterans in attendance with various crafts they had created in their classrooms. Smiling ear to ear, Simmons said, “I keep every single one of these every year!”
