MARLBORO CENTRAL SCHOOL DISTRICT 2009-2011 Strategic Planning Shortcuts
A strategic planning process delivers a set of defined initiatives (projects) that achieve a desired set of goals. The planning process involves a definition of these goals, an assessment of the resources available for meeting these goals, and specific plans to achieve these goals. The purpose of strategic or long-range planning is to assist an organization in establishing priorities and develop the goals to achieve these priorities. A strategic plan must be flexible and practical and yet serve as a guide to implementing programs, evaluating how these programs are doing, and making adjustments when necessary. A strategic plan must reflect the thoughts, feelings, ideas, and wants of the developers and mold them along with the organizations purpose, mission, and policies into an integrated document. The goals developed through the strategic plan must be diffused throughout the organization. Every leader within the organization must accept the plan, agree to its direction, and committee to its implementation. Through the use of SMART goals: Specific, Measurable, Agreed Upon, Realistic and Time Based. Goals are developed that are straightforward and emphasize what you want to happen. S Specific § Well Defined § Clear to anyone that has a basic knowledge of the project M Measurable § Know if the goal is obtainable and how far away completion is § Know when it has been achieved A Agreed Upon § Agreement with all the stake holders what the goals should be R Realistic § Within the availability of resources, knowledge and time T Time Based § Enough time to achieve the goal § Not too much time, which can affect project performance
